My 2011 Hoffman Challenge quilt. There are really too many flowers for a traditional Ikebana arrangement she is making, but it seems to work. Based on the look of antique Japanese screens. The storyteller sits beneath the machine embroidered then appliqued tree on a volcanic island. The phoenix and dragon conflict in front of the sun is the story she is telling, but she begins her story with the word "Betty" in Japanese Katagana alphabet.

This quilt represents a happy summer day in a slightly enchanted forest. It is entirely made using some form of applique. I applipieced the sky, grassy ground, mountains, and path together. All the trees, flowers and butterflies are stitched raw edge applique, and the birds and animals are embroidered on nylon veil and then appliqued onto the quilt.
